Civilized?????
Civilization is often measured by how much technology a certain group of people has learned and been able to incorporate. Thus, ignorance from what is new can also be labeled as uncivilized.
People living in far flung places where there is no access to advanced technology and where primitive culture is practiced are in the "uncivilized" category.
In one of our discussions in the class I'm taking, I commented to one of my group members when he saw the "tribe" as something that connotes a negative remark. I told him that "tribe" in our constitution means nation.
I hate to say that most of the people who grew up in the cities or low lands are "uncivilized" in their knowledge of tribal people. When I and my other co-tribers first entered the seminary where I am studying now, there were other seminarians who would not believe that I, for one, am from a tribe. What was their bias, "uncivilized" perception of what a person from a tribe would look like? People need to go backwards sometimes in order to learn from what used to be "uncivilized". Sometimes, what we call "uncivilized" is a picture of simple life, innocence to sin, and peaceful life. Civilization means nothing when it leads to man's destruction.....of life. It should instead preserve and bring hope in life.

Would enjoy hearing more from you on this topic. You have a unique experience to share with us.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I would also like to see a sampling of those devotionals you are working on. You don't need to translate it either. I'm just interested to see what your language looks like.
